Coastal Discovery & Stewardship Celebration Events January 13th – February 28th

Hands-On Citizen Science Program
When: Weekly at 11:00am, Saturday, January 14th – Saturday, February 25th
Where: Coastal Discovery Center, San Simeon
What: Each week the Coastal Discovery Center invites visitors to participate in its Plankton Monitoring program and other programs. Click here for more information.

Ocean Giants Movie at Hearst Castle
When: Weekly at 6:00pm, Saturday, January 14th – Saturday, February 25th
Where: Hearst Castle
What: The Coastal Discovery & Stewardship Film Festival will be held at the Hearst Castle Theater, which is an Iworks large-format theater with a five-story screen, as part of a celebration in January and February. Click here for more information.

Fiscalini Ranch Monthly Work Day
When: Saturday, January 14th & Saturday, February 18th at 9:00am
Where: Fiscalini Ranch

Elephant Seal Exploratory Tours
When: Weekly at 9:30am, Saturday, January 21st – Saturday, February 25th
Where: Elephant Seal Rookery, San Simeon
What: The Exploratory will feature a presentation on northern elephant seals, followed by a question and answer period with a panel of Friends of the Elephant Seal’s most experienced guides. Click here for more information.

When: Saturday, February 18th & Sunday, February 19th
Where: Along the Pacific Coast Wine Trail

Highway Closures

Highway 1 Closure

If you're heading to the Central Coast, be sure to be mindful of the stretch of Highway 1, 21 miles north of Cambria. Caltrans is busy with a major construction project to make traveling along the stunning Pacific Coast Highway a safer journey.

Highway 1 Storm Repair Along the Big Sur Coast Due to multiple active slides, State Route 1 is now closed between Ragged Pt. (SLO 72.87) and just south of Nepenthe (Mon 44).

Worried about Highway 1 Road Closures? Cambria and Hearst Castle are easily accessible from Highway 46 West from 101 South of Paso Robles or from northbound Highway 1 from the city of San Luis Obispo. Travelers from the north can easily take Highway 101 as an alternate route to Highway 1, which reduces travel time to Cambria by about 25 minutes.
