How to Get to Cambria

Cambria rests at the foot of the scenic Highway One/Big Sur coast, halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco, near Hearst Castle.

Directions By Car

Cambria is located 240 miles north of Los Angeles and 240 miles south of San Francisco on U.S. Highway 1.

Coming from Northern California: Fastest way is to take highway 101 to Highway 46 West. Turn right, north, on Highway 1.  For a more scenic route, take Highway 1 through Big Sur. This will add 2-3 hours to the overall travel time.

Coming from Southern California: From Highway 101 when you get to San Luis Obispo take the “Highway 1 Morro Bay/Hearst Castle” exit and follow north to Cambria. From Inland you can also take Highway 5 and cross over on 41 or 46 to the coast.

Coming from Eastern California: Highway 46 and 41 bring you right to the coast.

By Air:

The San Luis Obispo County Airport is 35 miles south of Cambria. Car rentals are available at the airport.

By Train:

An Amtrak train station is located in San Luis Obispo, 35 miles south of Cambria, as well as in Paso Robles,30 miles east of Cambria. Car rentals are available in San Luis Obispo,and a county bus runs between SLO and Cambria.

Highway Closures

Highway 1 Closure

If you're heading to the Central Coast, be sure to be mindful of the stretch of Highway 1, 21 miles north of Cambria. Caltrans is busy with a major construction project to make traveling along the stunning Pacific Coast Highway a safer journey.

Highway 1 Storm Repair Along the Big Sur Coast Due to multiple active slides, State Route 1 is now closed between Ragged Pt. (SLO 72.87) and just south of Nepenthe (Mon 44).

Worried about Highway 1 Road Closures? Cambria and Hearst Castle are easily accessible from Highway 46 West from 101 South of Paso Robles or from northbound Highway 1 from the city of San Luis Obispo. Travelers from the north can easily take Highway 101 as an alternate route to Highway 1, which reduces travel time to Cambria by about 25 minutes.
