Discovery Route Loops

Highway 1 Discovery Route

The Highway 1 Discovery Route (map below) is a 101 mile route along Highway 1 that passes through 10 Central Coast destination communities where there are activities that can be enjoyed while on vacation in San Luis Obispo County.  As you drive from location to location, each of the communities have developed driving “loops” that include wonderful things to see and do along the way.

What is a Loop?

Cambria’s loops are a group of destinations of interest that are drivable, thus the directions and mileage listed below each destination. The loops listed are: Beaches and Parks, Hiking Trails, Historical Architecture and Gardens.

Directions & Mileage

Directions are taken from the prior destination and should not be considered directions to the destination from any other location in Cambria. Directions are given based on Cambria being the starting location.

All mileage listed is the distance from the prior destination and is clocked to the entrance of that destination going both to and from each location.

About the Featured Destinations

Beneath the title, directions and mileage is a brief description about each of the destination locations. This is preliminary detail and in many cases more can be found either at the location or on the website of the parent organizations.

Loop pages

Each of the pages found on the navigation to the left can be viewed independently or you can return to the left navigation of each page to move on to view the next page.  This way you can decide if you would like to see one or all of the loops.

The map below shows the route through 10 destinations for 1 fantastic vacation!  Visit 10 distinctly different communities and check out their loops as you go.  For more information about the Discovery Route go to:

Highway Closures

Highway 1 Closure

If you're heading to the Central Coast, be sure to be mindful of the stretch of Highway 1, 21 miles north of Cambria. Caltrans is busy with a major construction project to make traveling along the stunning Pacific Coast Highway a safer journey.

Highway 1 Storm Repair Along the Big Sur Coast Due to multiple active slides, State Route 1 is now closed between Ragged Pt. (SLO 72.87) and just south of Nepenthe (Mon 44).

Worried about Highway 1 Road Closures? Cambria and Hearst Castle are easily accessible from Highway 46 West from 101 South of Paso Robles or from northbound Highway 1 from the city of San Luis Obispo. Travelers from the north can easily take Highway 101 as an alternate route to Highway 1, which reduces travel time to Cambria by about 25 minutes.

For the latest road closure information visit the Caltrans website.
