Fiscalini Ranch – Rodeo Grounds Entrance

Fiscalini Ranch Preserve is home to a number of endangered species and species of special concern, offering a wonderful display of nature’s diversity. The Ranch is bordered by a riparian habitat that encompasses tidal effect zones, seasonal freshwater marshes, and wetlands dotted with birds. The most outstanding natural feature is the dramatic ocean bluff that runs more than a mile along the shoreline of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary where you can view migrating whales, elephant seals, and other ocean mammals. The Ranch features eight trail entrances that meander through 437 acres of protected forest, riparian habitat, and grasslands. Springtime offers an abundance of wildflowers. The benches located along the trails are each unique pieces of art that offer stunning ocean views.

Burton Drive Trail

This half-mile trail starts at the intersection of Burton Drive and Eton Road at the Cambria Nursery. The trail runs along the outside of the guard rail down Burton Drive to the bridge over Santa Rosa Creek.

Take Schoolhouse Lane back toward Eton Road, turn right onto Eton Road. The beginning of the trail is at the Cambria Nursery. It parallels Burton Drive on the outside of the guardrail to the left of the entrance to the nursery (.15 miles from Schoolhouse Lane Trail).

Schoolhouse Lane Trail

The trail weaves down to the industrial “Tin City” area of Cambria.

From Pine Court return to Rogers Drive and turn right, then right again onto Martingale Road, left onto Yorkshire Drive, right onto Patterson Place and left onto Burton Drive. At Eton Road (Burton Drive goes left, Eton Road goes right), take a right, then a left onto Schoolhouse Lane to the field left of Santa Lucia Middle School. It is fenced but the gate is always open (.6 miles from Berry Trail).

Berry Trail

The Berry Trail is a steep, unimproved trail at the end of Pine Court that connects with Rodeo Grounds Road west of the Burton Drive Bridge over Santa Rosa Creek. This is a moderate hike.

From Kay Street turn right onto Burton Drive. Take Burton Drive across Highway 1. After Burton curves to the right, take a left onto Patterson Place at the Cambria Pines Lodge, then left onto Yorkshire Drive, right onto Martingale Road, left onto Rogers Drive, and left onto Pine Court to the end of the road (1.3 miles from Strawberry Canyon Trail).

Strawberry Canyon Trail

The Strawberry Canyon Trail is a large secluded loop trail that meanders through the towering pines.

Take Windsor Boulevard south, turn left onto Drake Street, left onto Ardath Drive, right onto Burton Drive, left onto Orville Avenue, curve right at Orville Place remaining on Orville Avenue, then turn right onto Kay Street and park at Burton Drive. The Strawberry Canyon entrance is straight ahead (1.6 miles from the south entrance of Fiscalini Ranch Preserve).

Fern Canyon Henry Kluck Memorial Trail

This short trail leads through Fern Canyon Preserve and features majestic Monterey pines, oaks, ferns and a seasonal creek. The trail crosses Fern Drive and dead ends in a chaparral near Highway 1. The trail is approximately 3/4 miles each way. This is an easy hike.

Return to Highway 1 going south, turn right onto Burton Drive then turn right onto Fern Drive. Follow Fern Drive to the bottom of Fern Canyon. There is a marker for the beginning of the trail on the left, 1 mile from the Santa Rosa Creek Trail.
